Ozone production and technologies

Ozone is nature’s own way of cleaning the air. Ozone is formed naturally through UV-light (ultraviolet rays), as well as during thunderstorms through the electrical discharge of lightning.

In an ozone generator or an air purifier, ozone is primarily produced using two different methods: UV-lamps or so-called corona discharge (electrical discharge).

UV-light
An UV-lamp emits UV-light, which splits the oxygen molecule (O²) into two atoms. These then bind with another oxygen molecule, forming ozone (O³), also called active oxygen or trioxygen.

The UV-lamps are suitable for use in air purifiers, where they break down bacteria and microorganisms and oxidise light gases. The air is cleansed and not just filtered, as is the case with conventional air purifiers with a filter.

The UV-lamps are on the other hand not efficient for the production of larger quantities of ozone, to be used for odour elimination.
In our air purifier Airmaster Nova, we are using an UV-lamp with 254nm, which only produces a very small amount of ozone.

Corona discharge
In an ozone generator which works with corona discharge, ozone conversion occur through electrical high-voltage discharge in a so-called dielectric (electrically insulated material), such as quartz glass or ceramics.

Quartz glass was the leading material for a long time in the industry. However, in our Airmaster ozone generators we exclusively use high-quality ceramic material, due to its unique material properties.

In our BL series we use ceramic plates and in our BLC series we use ceramic tubes. Ceramic tubes have many advantages compared to ceramic plates, such as more efficient ozone conversion, a longer service life, and the fact that this technology makes hose connections possible, which enables air treatment and grease reduction in ventilation ducts, flat canals and ventilation systems, as well as water treatment in spas, pools and water tanks. The hose can also be used for eliminating odours in places that are difficult to access, such as under a floor, in a wall cavity or in a car air conditioning system.

The electrical discharge is generated by a high-voltage unit, also called an HV-module (HV=High Voltage). For an efficient high-voltage discharge, there are high demands on the HV-module, many ozone generators encounter significant efficiency losses in the electronics.

Therefor in our most powerful ozone generators (more than 2000 mg/h) we use only our own high-voltage unit, developed especially for this purpose. Our HV-module MPU (Multi-Power-Unit) was developed specifically for ozone generators and is highly efficient.
